There has been a blossoming of air service to Brazil recently. Here’s the latest evidence. Continental Airlines plans to launch nonstop flights to Rio de Janeiro (GIG) on December 17 from its hub at Bush Houston Intercontinental (IAH). This will be a seasonal sojourn (through February 28, 2009) and there will just be three flights per week. Southbound Boeing 767-400s will depart Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays; northbound flights Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Continental already flies to Rio from Houston after an en route stop at Sao Paulo (GRU).
Why the move? The United States and Brazil recently inked a new air services pact, one that will provide for almost 50 percent more flying between the two countries.
Continental says it’s responding to the needs of its corporate customers in launching the new Rio nonstop. Both Houston and Rio de Janeiro are major oil markets. “This new service will also provide easier access to one of the most exciting tourist destinations in the world,” says John Slater, Continental’s Managing Director Latin America.
