A tale of three airports: detours, bags and parking
Airports can be romantic, full of promise and wonder. There’s none of that in this story. Just stuff you need to know to navigate two major airports, and one mid-size. This is basic blocking and tacking, folks: purely essential.
First up is what’s happening at Denver International. If you’re going to be tight for time, rushing to catch a plane, you need to know that one of the main roadways to DEN – Peña Blvd – is undergoing some construction work. That means the two inbound lanes between 64th Avenue to just before Tower Road will be closed through the Thanksgiving holiday. You’ll need to add extra travel time to our airport drive, and check the detour signs.
Southwest Florida International, the airport that serves Ft. Myers, has re-worked its parking rates. The result is a bit, but just a bit, of a break for really long-term parkers. As of Oct. 1 you’ll pay $60 for the first week’s parking in the Long-Term area. The previous rate was $62. After the first week’s parking, the daily rate in the Long-Term area drops dramatically – from $11 per day down to $4.
Long-Term parking at the airport is located on a large lot just beyond the garage. There’s free shuttle service and luggage assistance for those who park there – as well as free help in inflating your tires, jump-staring your engine and even finding your car.
From Charlotte-Douglas International, US Airways’ largest hub, comes word that they’re remodeling baggage claim. No big deal? Consider: this is the largest remake of the baggage claim area since the terminal opened 29 years ago. When the dust settles in December, look for new ceiling tiles, new eco-friendly lighting, new sineage, and terrazzo flooring. The old carpeting is being tossed.
CLT (that’s the airport’s code) is taking things one step at a time, and doing the remodeling in phases. That means it’s shutting down just one conveyor belt at a time until all nine areas surrounding each conveyor are complete.
