Fifteen airlines have agreed to buy alternative aviation fuel in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint in flight, said the Air Transport Association of America.
Air Canada, American Airlines, Atlas Air, Delta Air Lines, FedEx Express, JetBlue Airways, Lufthansa German Airlines, Mexicana Airlines, Polar Air Cargo, United Airlines, UPS Airlines, US Airways, Seattle-based Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, agreed to buy the eco-friendly fuel from one of two producers.

The two companies – AltAir Fuels and Rentech, Inc. – have announced agreements with the various airlines hat include pre-paid gallons of renewable jet fuel and diesel. In a press release statement, AltAir said the fuel would replace about 10 percent of the petroleum fuel consumed annually at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, cutting carbon emissions by about 14 billion pounds over 10 years.
