Delta adds Atlanta-Barbados route
Delta Airlines has announced the launch of a new route from its hub at Atlanta's Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.
Starting December 8, 2005 travelers will have the option of a direct flight on Delta from Atlanta to Barbados' Grantley Adams International Airport.
The four-hour trip will fly both ways three times a week on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Currently Barbados is only accessible on direct flights from Miami, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Newark, New York, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Bill Silvermintz, vice president of marketing for the Americas at the Barbados Tourism Authority said: "Delta's new service from its hub allows an opportunity for each one of the 88 million passengers passing through Atlanta to visit Barbados."
Despite the airline being in financial trouble, Delta has continued to announce new routes, more flights, and discount airfares. The strategy of the world's second largest airline in terms of passenger volume appears to be to offer wider service at lower prices.

The new route which started yesterday (8th December)
is great news for Barbados. 6 million potential travellers live within an hours drive of Hartfield Airport.
Connecting flights via Atlanta must be almost unparelled with other US gateways.
Currently is it estimated one in ten visitors (about 55,000 per year that arrive on Barbados
use their frequent flyer miles to reach us.
Hopefully both DELTA and the destination travel policymakers will address this enormous market.

Why is Delta ending its Monday flight from Atlanta to Barbados? Is it planning to end the route altogether? We flew down there this summer on a Thursday and the flight was full. The Monday flight was booked up as well. There are a lot of Bajans flying out of Atlanta as well as people who connect and those flying on Continental's codeshare. I hope they continue this route. The next best alternative out of Atlanta is a very inconvenient American Airlines flight that connects in Miami.
