Mexicana and JAL enter code-sharing agreement

The Mexican and Japanese airline network just got bigger and cheaper.

Mexicana Airlines, Mexico's second largest carrier, and JAL, Asia's largest carrier, have just reached a code-share agreement based on connections in Los Angeles, a major hub for both airlines.

The agreement will expand JAL's Mexican network to four cities and will give Mexicana access to Tokyo and Osaka.

More specifically, JAL will be able to code share on daily Mexicana flights between Los Angeles and Mexico City, Guadalajara, Los Cabos, and Cancun.

Mexicana will be able to code share on all daily flights operated by JAL between Los Angeles and Tokyo and Osaka.

The agreement, though still subject to government approval, will come into effect on October 30, 2005.

For customers the deal means an increase in benefits along with smoother service. The frequent flyer programs operated by both airlines should be merging soon, meaning that passengers on either airline can use mileage toward a discounted airfare on a JAL or Mexican flight.

JAL has a similar code-share agreement with 26 other airlines, as does Mexicana with 13 others.
