JetBlue aims for Mexico

Discount airline JetBlue has announced it has applied to the Department of Transportation for the rights to fly direct, daily flights between New York's John F Kennedy International Airport and Cancun, Mexico.

The route would be JetBlue's first Mexican destination and its fifth international service.

Both the Mexican and US governments are expected to approve the application, particularly after an aviation expansion pact that was recently signed by both countries.

After the expected approval, JetBlue officials have said they would like to begin flying the new route by December 17.

The move adds more tension between the discount airline and its rival Delta, who also recently applied for the New York-Cancun flight.

Delta has been cutting flights in its backyard, the American South-east, and JetBlue has swooped in and added services to nearly every destination that Delta has removed from its schedule.
