US and Mexico expand air travel agreements
The US and Mexican governments have agreed to expand air services between the two countries, a move that will enable airlines to add more flights that travel across the border.
The agreement is the first expansion pact since a similar 1999 deal that allowed two airlines from each country to operate between American and Mexican destinations.
The new deal will allow three airlines from each country to fly between any US destination and 14 cities in Mexico. Included in the 14 selected cities were the tourist hotspots of Acapulco and Cancun.
Transportation secretary Norman Mineta told the Arizona Daily Star: "We will continue to work with the Mexican government to liberalize our aviation agreement even further."
The move should increase competition between US airlines, which should result in lower airfares to Mexico. A date for the changes to go into effect has not yet been announced.
