American and Delta match JetBlue airfares

Delta and American Airlines have reduced their airfares for the Boston-New York route to match those of discount airline JetBlue.

The move comes after a flurry of added routes and promotional discount airfares from JetBlue. Many of its new routes were already served by American and Delta.

American has pegged its one-way airfare at $25 and this will take effect on November 8. Delta has cut its fares to $40 each way.

JetBlue's initial airfare will be $25, but after the promotional period is over, tickets will range from $40 to $125, depending on advance booking and availability.

Before JetBlue's arrival on the New York-Boston scene, a round-trip flight on American or Delta averaged $292 and $286 on US Airways.

Delta spokeswoman Chris Kelly told Reuters: "It is not at all unusual for us to match something like that. Delta has competitive fares in every market that we serve."

A JetBlue spokeswoman said that this was the effect that JetBlue had on every route it served, effectively benefiting all passengers.

I do not fly much anymore, but these prices are hard to believe - so I will try them in the next couple of weeks.
