Mexican discount airline increases fleet

Interjet, one of Mexico's latest discount airlines, has announced that it will purchase ten Airbus A320 jets along with ten more options for more planes in the future.

The move is an encouraging sign for the Mexican discount airline industry. With the Mexican government's recent privatization of the country's two major airlines, Mexicana and Aeromexico, a number of discount airlines modelled after Southwest and JetBlue have entered the market.

It is great news for Mexicans and tourists traveling around Mexico as prior to the arrival of airlines like Interjet, domestic airfares were at times more expensive than international flights.

While Interjet has not taken off yet, it is accepting reservation requests for its flights that will begin in December operating just outside of Mexico City.

The airline's president, Miguel Aleman, said: "We will introduce the low-fares and high efficiency concept in the Mexican air transport industry whilst preserving the highest standards of service, quality and safety for travelers on domestic routes in Mexico."
