Northwest to cut more flights

Just weeks after cutting a number of flights in its backyard in the Midwest, Northwest Airlines has announced it is axing direct flights to two more of its major routes.

Starting January 4, 2006 the troubled airline will end services from its hub at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport to New York and Washington, D.C.

Instead Northwest's regional airline, Northwest Airlink, will fly much smaller planes to the two cities via a connecting service.

The cuts will make discount airline Midwest the only airline to offer direct flights between Milwaukee and New York and Washington, D.C.

Both Northwest and Delta Airlines are operating under chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and have been forced to come up with a new strategy to return to profitability.

Their trend appears to be cutting domestic routes that are dominated by discount airlines in favor of international and long-haul routes.
