Fuel costs push up ticket prices

As many expected, rising fuel prices are about to hit travelers in the wallet after a number of airlines announced that they have raised return ticket prices by $10 on most domestic flights.

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines as well as Continental Airlines, US Airways and Northwest Airlines have all confirmed the increase.

The first indication of a price rise came on Thursday afternoon (January 19) when Delta announced it would be increasing its prices by $5 each way.

Other companies followed Delta's lead, and when US Airways confirmed its price hike over the weekend, it left passengers with a tougher search for cheap flights.

According to the airlines, this rise is necessary after fuel costs increased by 7.5 per cent in six days.

The price rise applies only to coach fares, and none of the airlines has indicated that a further rise on business-class fares is imminent.
