Staying alive in Portland

It has been proven conclusively that automated external defibrillators (AED) save lives, and the Port of Portland, which runs Portland International Airport (PDX), is trying to get the word out.

Last spring, the airport put more than 30 AEDs at strategic points throughout the airport terminal and parking structure. Then, the Port of Portland taught some 200 airport emergency responders, as well as dozens of airport employees, how to use the life-saving devices.

The final phase of the project is making the traveling public aware AEDs exist, and how to respond should someone need help.

"Portland International has a highly-trained staff to help travelers and employees in an emergency," says Ted Secor, a paramedic and PDX's AED program coordinator. "But these AEDs help fill a gap when every second counts."

The best thing to do if you or someone around you suffers what could be a heart attack is contact emergency medical personnel. Portland International Airport and the American Heart Association strongly recommend that only trained responders use AEDs.

That said, automatic external defibrillators are relatively easy to use. Emergency workers are guided through the process via a series of voice prompts. Adhesive electrode pads, attached to the victim's chest, transmit their heart rhythm to the device. The AED analyzes that rhythm and tells the rescuer whether or not a shock is required.

If you're interested in how to properly administer CPR, and how to use an AED, use the American Heart Association website or call 1-888-CPR-LINE .
