Air Canada’s new RJ to New York
Air Canada is showing off its sleek new breed of Brazilian regional jet on the run from New York JFK to Calgary (YYC).
The 93-seat Embraer E190s aren’t like conventional regional jets you may be accustomed to flying, such as the ERJ-145 and CRJ200. Those airplanes carry 50 passengers, interior dimensions are comparatively cramped, and baggage fits in the tail (not in the belly as in larger airplanes such as the 737).
The E190, by contrast, offers spacious overhead storage for carry-ons, 2x2 seating (the ERJ-145 sports a 2x1 configuration), and plenty of headroom.
Air Canada has fitted its E190s for two classes of service: Executive and Hospitality. The former offers fliers 39 inches of legroom, the latter 33 inches. Air Canada has firm orders for 45 of this new generation aircraft.
The JFK to Calgary route should be especially popular with business fliers. Calgary is the center of Canada’s important petroleum industry. It’s also a jumping off place for leisure trips into the magnificent Canadian Rockies.
Air Canada lays claim to offering more nonstop flights between the United States and Canada than any other carrier – 385 nonstop flights per day on 80 routes to and from 50 U.S. and six Canadian destinations.
