Hollywood-style airport robbers arrested
Seven Miami residents have been arrested in connection with a daring heist at Miami International Airport that saw $7.4 million of cash stolen.
Four of the defendants have been charged with carrying out the robbery, while three others are accused of kidnapping one of the thieves in a bid to get their hands on the loot.
In a raid that had all the hallmarks of a Hollywood gangster movie, masked robbers – at least one of whom was armed - forced personnel and security guards at an airport warehouse to lie face down before loading millions of dollars into a waiting pickup truck.
The money was part of an $80 million currency shipment that had arrived earlier that day, November 6, 2005, on a Lufthansa Airlines flight from Frankfurt.
Information on the robbers began pouring in after a $150,000 reward was offered for tip-offs leading to their capture.
Police then tracked 31-year-old suspect Jeffrey Boatwright to a hotel garage where they found him bound and gagged by kidnappers who were allegedly demanding $500,000 for his release.
The bulk of the $7.4 million has yet to be recovered.
