Better shopping at Baltimore/Washington

Airport shopping malls are increasingly big business. For example, at Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International (BWI) in Maryland, the aerodrome’s AIRMALL® has just added, or seen the refurbishment of, four big name brand stores: Johnston & Murphy shoes, Airport Wireless/palm, Java City, and a newly remodeled Brookstone, which is stocked full of all sorts of useful travel products such as pillows and health and fitness gear.

Johnston & Murphy, Airport Wireless/palm, and Brookstone are all on Concourse D. Java City is new to Terminal A/B.

BAA Maryland is the developer and manager of BWI’s new retail effort. The initial phase of a two-year project encompasses some 140,000 square feet of new and refurbished concession space. Look for a variety of new stores and eateries to open at the airport, expanding “dwelling space” opportunities for passengers looking for something different to do between flights.

Over the past couple of decades, Baltimore/Washington International has grown into a low-fare powerhouse in the southern Maryland/northern Virginia area. It’s a prime focus city (the airline doesn’t like to call them hubs) for discount carrier Southwest Airlines. Another discount airline, AirTran Airways, also enjoys a significant presence at the airport.
