More African air links
Some much-needed African air service from the nation’s capital: North American Airlines intends to launch weekly scheduled flights from Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International (BWI) to Banjul, The Gambia (BJL) from June 4. The flight will continue on to Accra, Ghana (ACC).
North American will fly the route with a wide body Boeing 767-300ER. The craft is fitted for both economy and business-class service. Up front, seats are all-leather, offer 55 inches of pitch (essentially, knee room), and recline a comfortable 135 degrees. Business-class fliers also get 100 channels of on-demand, in-flight entertainment.
Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International is the D.C. area’s prime cheap-seat airport, and a magnet for new service. Maryland Lt. Governor Michael S. Steele is especially pleased about the new link, saying “It will create new opportunities, and advance the exchange of goods, services, and ideas”.
It will also mean that U.S. travelers don’t have to connect over European hubs as often in order to get to West Africa. With the start of BWI service on June 4, and an additional flight out of New York JFK that begins on June 3, North American will be fielding three weekly direct flights between the United States and West Africa.
The new Baltimore/Washington to Banjul to Accra flight departs on Sunday and arrives Monday. The return Accra to Banjul to Baltimore/Washington flight leaves on Sunday and arrives on the same day back at Baltimore/Washington.
