Air China joins Star Alliance

Star Alliance, the international aviation network, is set to welcome its latest member: Air China.

The network, which includes Air Canada and the U.S. airlines United and US Airways, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the airline, a formal invitation to become part of the global organization.

Specific passenger benefits of the alliance include being able to redeem frequent-flier miles across member airlines, use of 660 worldwide airport lounges, and priority check-in, baggage, and ticketing facilities.

Jaan Albrecht, Star Alliance CEO, said that the group has been looking to expand its influence in Asia, particularly in China, which has become a popular tourist destination and is the world's fastest-growing economy.

Li Jiaxiang, Air China's Chairman, agreed: "China is one of the fastest growing civil aviation markets with great potential.

"Through cooperation with Air China, Star Alliance will connect its international route network with China through Air China's extensive domestic network and extend its global route network," Li continued.

"The traveling public will have access to more convenient services, savings, and improved efficiency."

An offer has also been tabled for Shanghai Airlines to join, which, if accepted, would increase the network to 20 member airlines, 912 destinations, and more than 16,500 daily flights and further solidify the relationship between China and Star Alliance.
