Spirit Airlines

Spirited away to San Francisco – new low-fare flights

Want to save money between Detroit (DTW) and San Francisco (SFO)? Check out Spirit Airlines’ new nonstop. The discount airline has just launched once-daily A319 service on the route.

The carrier’s crop of new twin-engine Airbuses are fitted with 130 coach, and eight Spirit Plus Business class seats. By this fall, the cheapseater plans to field an all-Airbus fleet, retiring its remaining and venerable MD-80s.

If you’re planning a trip to the Bay Area from the Upper Midwest, or from any of Spirit’s cities which connect over Detroit, here’s the schedule for the new flight: westbound, Spirit (the carrier’s airline code is NK) Flight 415 departs Detroit at 7:30pm, and arrives at San Francisco at 9:50pm. The return leg is a red eye. NK408 pushes back from the gate at 10:50pm and gets to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport at 6:20am. Detroit is a major base for the discount airline, which lays claim to being the airport’s largest low-cost carrier.

Based in Fort Lauderdale, Spirit offers service to 30 cities in the United States, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. The discount airline serves up low fares, but really can’t be considered no-frills. There are all-leather seats in both business class and coach, and a frequent-flier program that offers available seats on every flight with no blackout dates.
