Boeing sells first passenger jumbo since 2002
According to reports in USA Today, aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing has sold a passenger model of its flagship plane, the 747 jumbo jet, for the first time in almost four years.
It is the first 747 sold since November 2002 that will be used for passenger transport rather than cargo, news that should please airline passengers, who reportedly prefer the comfort and safety offered by the four-engined jumbo.
Over the past few years, airlines have generally favored smaller and more fuel-efficient jets as gas prices skyrocket.
It is so far unclear which airline has bought the jumbo jet, although Boeing hopes that it spells a long-awaited return to what used to be the jewel in the crown of any airline – its jumbo carriers.
With the introduction of the Airbus A-380, set to be flown commercially for the first time later this year by Singapore Airlines, the industry is showing signs of reversing the recent trend of opting for smaller regional jets to save on maintenance and running costs.
