Aeromexico heads to Ft Lauderdale
The largest Mexican carrier by fleet size, Aeromexico, is to restart flights to Fort Lauderdale from its hub in Mexico City at some point in the next two months, according to a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
The carrier will resuscitate its service between the two hubs, which originally operated for a year until they were cancelled in July 2004 through a lack of passenger demand.
However, airline officials have said that in the past two years customer traffic between the two cities, particularly among Florida's Hispanic population, has grown by around eight percent, prompting the U-turn.
Aeromexico hopes to achieve a 35 percent share of the market by offering one daily nonstop flight. The cost of a ticket to travel on the airline is thought to be priced at around $350 for a round-trip.
When the route begins, it will become Aeromexico's 14th U.S. destination. The airline is looking to expand its established international routes as competition for domestic traffic is increasing with the introduction of several new startup, low-cost domestic carriers.
