Aeromexico orders Dreamliner aircraft
Mexico's largest airline, Aeromexico, has announced that it will become the first Latin American carrier to fly the new Boeing 787 aircraft.
Orders for the new Dreamliner planes, the latest in commercial airline technology, have been placed by many of the major American carriers since the new design was unveiled, but Aeromexico's foray is the first from south of the border.
Delivery on the three airplanes to be leased to Aeromexico is scheduled to begin in 2010 and will herald a new era in commercial aviation through greater fuel efficiency, which could help to quell price increases, and superior passenger comfort.
"By ordering three 787s, the airline has given fresh impetus to its fleet modernization program," said Andres Conesa, CEO of Aeromexico.
"[The move] aims to improve the airline's operational efficiency and consolidate its leadership in Mexico and Latin America, in both the quality of its aircraft and the service it provides its customers."
The new twin-aisle planes will be used primarily on Aeromexico's long-haul routes to Europe and Asia, replacing the older Boeing 767s it currently leases.
