Long Beach Airport faces council vote
A second key vote on the future expansion of Long Beach Airport in California will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, July 11).
Following a decision taken by the city council last month to support some form of expansion at the hub to boost the local economy, councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga will ask the panel to rescind the vote.
Local residents are reportedly considering a legal challenge if the original ruling is allowed to stand, as they fear expansion of the airfield could impact the lives of local residents whose homes and schools are close by.
The airport has grown significantly since JetBlue began flying out of Long Beach in 2001 and Reyes Uranga said the arguments on both sides needed to be clarified and looked at further before a clear course of action could be decided.
"There's a lot of hysteria, untruths, finger-pointing going on," Reyes Uranga told the Los Angeles Times.
"Nothing might happen Tuesday or everything might happen."
