Manchester-Boston requests bus service

Kevin Dillon, the director of Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, has requested the ratification of a six-month pilot program for busing passengers to the airport from surrounding areas, the New Hampshire Union Leader reports.

Dillon has petitioned local government officials to allow the airfield to provide a shuttle service operating at least every two hours from Woburn and Boston, which would increase accessibility and passenger traffic.

The shuttle service would be free to holders of airline tickets from Manchester-Boston and estimates suggest that it would cost local government around $500,000 to set up and operate for the trial period.

The move comes soon after the airport underwent a name change to incorporate "Boston" into its title in the hope it would attract business from travelers headed to the city.

In addition to increasing ties with Beantown, the shuttle buses would link the hub to northern Massachusetts - the fastest growing market for the airport, which accounts for around 20 percent of its 4.5 million yearly passengers.

This is just plain stupid on the airport's side to even think of a move such as this. I am an airport taxi operator and we pay a good price for our permits, and the airport wants to institute this form of transportation.

The business traveler and the professional person does not want to sit on a cattle car and be transported to different areas. The airport wants to spend 5ook for what, the business people want to get to their destination in a quick and timely manner. They should invest that money to help the taxi program and allow us to transport the airport customers the right way.

The airports make money with every vehicle that enters to pick up fares, taxi or reservation. If they put 20 people on a bus it only receives one amount per bus. If they allow 20 vehicles in, they make 20 times the amount, go figure. It's a down feeling when the person who allows you to operate a taxi and you maybe a decent worker, and now they want to take it away, what do you think?
