Terror scare extends Northwest strike deadline
The recent terror scare has prompted Northwest Airlines' flight attendants to extend their deadline before calling a strike.
The Chapter 11 carrier’s flight attendants say they will give the airline until August 25 to reach an accord with their union. If that doesn’t happen, targeted work stoppages could ensue, and if that happens, Northwest says the airline’s viability could be in jeopardy.
Federal Bankruptcy Court allowed Northwest to impose new labor terms on its flight attendants. Those same flight attendants had earlier rejected a proposed contract. The airline wants some $195 million in annual savings from its cabin crewmembers. The idea is to help it exit bankruptcy.
Flight attendants have threatened CHAOS (Create Havoc Across Our System) actions against the carrier; spot walkouts at the last minute aimed at disrupting operations. Most industry observers agree that were such strikes to occur, the result could well be liquidation of the historic airline.
