Delta

Delta is looking healthier

Hard on the heels of racking up its first quarterly profit in quite a while, Delta Air Lines is recalling crewmembers - as many as 65 pilots and 200 flight attendants. The nation’s third-largest carrier, currently fighting to emerge from Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, needs them to fuel its ambitious expansion plans, which, it hopes, will transform the airline.

Jim Whitehurst, Delta’s Chief Operating Officer, says the flight attendants are needed to “help ensure a smooth operation for our customers”. He says the pilots “will provide relief in certain aircraft categories”. Both pilots and flight attendants are critical to the carrier’s expansion, especially its overseas sojourns.

Other signs of the airline regaining strength: 100 maintenance personnel are being brought back, and Delta is actively hiring airport customer service and reservations agents.

Perhaps in biggest need at the Atlanta (ATL)-based airline are flight attendants who speak Spanish and French. They’ll help crew aircraft on its burgeoning European and Latin American route structures.
