Alaska ups Mexico capacity by 22 percent – more flights, more cities
Travelers seem never to tire of Mexico. It’s close and it’s exotic – all at the same time.
Airlines all along the West Coast are increasing capacity south of the border. Delta Air Lines is making a major move out of Los Angeles International (LAX), and Alaska Airlines is increasing service from a number of Pacific Coast cities. Consider what’s happening just this weekend:
- Saturday, October 28, Alaska launches nonstop service from Portland (PDX) to Los Cabos (SJD). This is a seasonal service, with four weekly flights;
- Sunday, October 29, Alaska Airlines inaugurates nonstop San Francisco to Cancun (CUN) service, as well as nonstop Portland to Puerto Vallarta (PVR) flights. There will be a trio of weekly southbound sojourns on each route;
- Monday, October 30, Alaska premiers its La Paz (LAP) flights out of Los Angeles International (LAX). Alaska is laying on three weekly round-trips to the resort city on the Sea of Cortez. La Paz is a terrific place for diving, kayaking, sailing, and fishing.
At the same time as Alaska launches these new routes, it is adding flight frequencies on a number of existing runs. Again, all told, this new schedule boosts Alaska Airlines' Mexican seats by more than a fifth. It already flies more than 1.2 million passengers each year between the West Coast of the United States and Mexico.
