Lufthansa, Singapore reduces fuel charges
Two of the largest foreign airlines that fly to the United States have reduced the cost of fuel surcharges on intercontinental flights.
The German national airline Lufthansa, which flies from a host of American destinations including Los Angeles, Denver, Atlanta, Chicago, and New York, has dropped its additional charge by €10 (about $12.50) per sector from today (Monday, October 16).
Any tickets bought from this date onwards will be subject to a $65 (€52) surcharge rather than $78 (€62).
Similarly, Singapore Airlines, which flies to cities including New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles and operates a codeshare agreement with Air Canada, is also dropping its charges.
Customers will pay $8 less per leg for tickets booked on or after October 14 because of the recent drops in the price of oil.
Both airlines had expressed their wish to keep their fuel surcharges as closely linked to the actual increases and decreases in the price of jet fuel as possible and these latest announcements seem to confirm their promise to pass on any savings to their customers.
