JFK is plugged in

John F. Kennedy International will have 50 public power stanchions by the end of this month, as part of a new range of passenger facilities at the New York airport.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey began installing the eight-foot "power poles" in December, and several are now available for public use in the hub's terminals.

Sponsored by Samsung, the stanchions are part of a revenue-enhancing advertising drive, each offering four power outlets that allow passengers to recharge their electronic appliances free of charge.

"One of our chief goals at the Port Authority is simple: be sure our customers get the best service possible," explained Anthony Coscia, Port Authority Chairman.

"This power pole initiative - the first of its kind in the U.S. - is one of many ways travelers at our facilities benefit from that credo."

The airport agency is planning to install similar devices at Newark and LaGuardia, though no date has yet been set.
