Mileage Plus accounts will expire soon, United warns
Members of United Airlines’ Mileage Plus frequent-flier program have been warned that accounts will now expire after only 18 months of inactivity, in a reduction designed to reward loyal customers.
Account holders who have not earned or redeemed air miles since July 1, 2006, have until the end of 2007 to either use their accumulated miles, or amass more, to keep their membership active.
The revised system means that passengers who fly with United regularly will compete against fewer fliers when redeeming their miles in the carrier's promotions.
"This change makes our Mileage Plus program better for customers who are most loyal to United, reduces our operating costs, and brings our program in line with major competitors," said Dennis Cary, United's Senior Vice-President of Marketing.
"We offer several ways our customers can easily stay active in our Mileage Plus program and enjoy the benefits that come with earning and redeeming miles with United."
The Chicago-based carrier, which was recently awarded the right to fly between the U.S. and China, has urged members of its loyalty program that they don't necessarily need to buy a new United flight to keep their account active.
Fliers can sign up for a Mileage Plus Visa, donate miles to charity, transfer miles to a friend or family member, use miles to purchase a range of products and services, or redeem miles to book a flight with one of United's 28 airline partners.
