New $1 flight from Chicagoland to Arizona

Live in the eastern reaches of Chicagoland and looking for an absolutely rock-bottom discount airfare to the deep desert – the Phoenix area to be precise? Don’t want to fight cross-town traffic to get to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) or Midway (MDW) Airports? Here’s a $1 (really) alternative. Really.

An airline called SkyValue is launching nonstop service from Gary Chicago International Airport (GYY) to Mesa Williams Gateway Airport (WGA) January 24. For that date — and that date only — the discount airline is selling one-way seats for $1 plus taxes and fees. The SkyValue’s standard discount airfares on the route start at $79.

There will be three round-trips weekly between the eastern Chicago airport and Mesa, an outlying aerodrome serving the Phoenix area. 737-800s will make the run Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

There is considerable competition from the Chicago area to the Valley of the Sun, all the rest of it flowing through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).

Discount airline Southwest offers nonstop service from Chicago Midway, and American Airlines, United Airlines, and US Airways field flights from O’Hare International Airport.
