New Chinese connection: the winner is ... United
A significant new Chinese connection is about to be forged, and the big winners are United Airlines and Washington, D.C.
A quartet of carriers coveted new nonstop service to China from their major hubs: American Airlines from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Northwest Airlines from Detroit, and Continental Airlines from New York/Newark (EWR), but it is United that prevailed, with its bid to offer nonstop Washington, D.C. Dulles (IAD) to Beijing (PEK) service.
United says it can field flights as early as March 25.
United Airlines' largest aircraft, a three-class, 347-seat Boeing 747-400, will make the run to Beijing Capital International Airport. At PEK, fliers can connect to 16 cities in China through United's code-sharing pacts with Air China and Shanghai Airlines.
United Airlines' new nonstop will mark the first and only service between the capitals of the two countries. The carrier's Washington, D.C. Dulles hub is United's key transatlantic gateway.
