Royal Jordanian becomes first Middle Eastern oneworld member

Royal Jordanian Airlines became the first Middle Eastern carrier to join the oneworld alliance yesterday (Tuesday, March 27).

The airline alliance's first new entrant for six years - and an initial step in a significant program of expansion reported last month - will be joined by Japan Airlines and Malev Hungarian Airlines in the coming days.

The Amman-based carrier brings links with 50 destinations in 33 countries across the Middle East, Gulf, North Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America to the international network.

Royal Jordanian is already a member of the alliance's Global Explorer product. Combinable fares and deals with other oneworld carriers will be available on April 1.

Samer Majali, the Middle Eastern airline's Chief Executive, described the inauguration as a "historic milestone". "Royal Jordanian will add considerable value to oneworld, strengthening its network significantly in the world's fastest growing region for air travel demand," he said.

John McCulloch, oneworld Managing Partner, believes the new entrant's presence will "further increase the value, choice, and range that we offer our customers".

Hong Kong-based Dragonair is also due to join the alliance later this year.
