Carbon offsetting from Continental
Continental Airlines has announced that it will offer a carbon offsetting program, through a partnership with Sustainable Travel International.
Though the program will be voluntary, it will allow Continental passengers to purchase carbon offset options from Sustainable Travel International, so as to redress the impact of their carbon footprint.
The announcement marks a significant step towards encouraging carbon offsetting programs, as it is the first time Sustainable Travel International has worked in tandem with an airline.
Brian T Mulls, President of Sustainable Travel International - a non-profit organisation which pursues renewable energy, reforestation and other environmental projects - said:
"Continental's thorough, substantive approach to the concerns of climate change and longstanding environmental commitment prove that Continental is an industry leader in this field, and we are proud to join with them on this venture."
The carbon offsetting option will begin in late 2007 and continues a concerted effort on the part of Continental to promote environmental responsibility.
The carrier has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by almost 35 per cent over the last decade, and Larry Kellner, Continental Chairman and Chief Executive, described the new deal as "a credible, global, high-quality option for offsetting emissions".
