Icelandair launches Halifax flight - connection options
Residents on Canada's eastern coastline just got a break, one that opens up lots of seasonal European destinations to travelers from that part of the country. Icelandair, which helped pioneer low-fare transatlantic passage, has launched nonstop Halifax (YHZ) to Reykjavik (KEF) service.
While Iceland is a place of amazing sights, friendly folks, and unexpectedly fine food (the fish is sublime), what renders this route so intriguing are the connection opportunities out of KEF. From there Canadians can connect onward to Scandinavia, Great Britain, and Continental Europe.
The flight from Halifax to Reykjavik itself is just four hours. It departs the Nova Scotian city at 10pm, three times a week (Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays).
This, again, is a seasonal route. Service is slated to run through September.
While small, Icelandair is one of the most experienced carriers in existence. It has been around for 70 years.
The airline's main long-range aircraft is the narrowbody Boeing 757. Icelandair will make a significant jump in 2010 when the first of its ultra-long-range widebody Boeing 787 Dreamliners comes on line.
