Indonesian aviation standards still too low

Indonesia is failing to comply with international air safety standards, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has warned, despite ongoing consultation efforts.

As reported last month, the FAA has lowered the country's safety rating from Category 1 to Category 2, but has not yet had cause to reverse this decision.

Ten years ago, the South-East Asian archipelago was found to meet the global safety benchmark set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), but the FAA is now concerned that civil authorities are currently failing to adequately regulate air traffic.

Indonesia's Category 2 rating means that its aviation agency either lacks the technical expertise, record-keeping, inspection procedures, or trained personnel to meet the minimum international standards.

Working with agency representatives, however, the FAA is confident that Indonesia can meet the ICAO benchmark and recover its Category 1 rating.

American aviation assessors will continue to periodically review the situation and deliver updates.
