Competition is coming to Denver-London route

With Open Skies set to change the transatlantic skyscape next spring there's going to be competition on the Denver (DEN) to London Heathrow (LHR) route. United Airlines is the carrier. It will be going head to head with British Airways, the incumbent airline.

March 31, 2008, is the launch date, and United's competition could prove formidable. That's because UA has a major domestic hub at DEN. That allows it to feed flyers from throughout the region to its new London flight. Both BA and United will run Boeing 777s on the route.

Once upon a time, Continental Airlines flew nonstop from Denver to London Gatwick (LGW). It ended the run after it dismantled its Denver hub.

An added element to the British Airways, United Airlines Denver duel is that BA is a major member of the oneworld alliance, while United is a key player in the Star Alliance.
