Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International is officially the busiest airport in the U.S.

According to figures from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), 994,466 flights passed through the airport in 2007, an increase of 1.8 percent on the previous year.

This is the third year running the airport has taken the title of busiest airport in the country, beating off competition from Chicago O’Hare and Dallas/Fort Worth.

Some 935,000 flights were logged at Chicago, which was a dip of 2.4 percent on figures from 2006. Dallas recorded 686,711 flights, down by 2.3 percent from last year.

The growth in flight activity at Atlanta has been attributed to new routes from Delta Air Lines and AirTran Airways.

Herschel Grangent, Spokesperson for the airport told the Chicago Tribune: "AirTran's domestic growth strategy is working as is Delta's international strategy, which should help us remain a prominent connecting point."
