Delays reach peak level at Salt Lake City
Flights through Salt Lake City International Airport were delayed by record amounts of time in December, the latest official figures show.
Statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation found record delays in December across all major airports. However, at Salt Lake City just 63.4 percent of flights arrived on time, with over a third at least 15 minutes late.
This is the lowest on-time rate achieved by the airport and officials have suggested that bad weather and runway closures towards the end of 2007 were partly to blame.
Barbara Gann, Spokesperson at the airport, told the Salt Lake Tribune that 30 inches of snow fell on the tarmac in December.
"With that amount of snow, weather would have some impact on airline operations," she commented.
Anthony Black, Delta Spokesman, also cited bad weather for the airline's on time record at Salt Lake City and across the rest of the U.S.
He said: "In December, we suffered significant delays related to winter weather."
