Domestic cuts continue - two airlines axe routes
Even as airlines grow high-yield international flights at an increasing clip, they continue to cut domestic service. The latest evidence of this happening between Charlotte (CLT) and Milwaukee (MKE), and between Los Angeles (LAX) and Wichita (ICT).
In the former arena, Midwest Airlines is eliminating flights between its Milwaukee hub and Charlotte. That leaves Charlottte-hubbed US Airways to do the heavy lifting on the MKE-CLT run. Midwest pulls out of the Charlotte-Milwaukee market on April 6.
Farther west, Wichita (ICT) has lost one of its two nonstop carriers to Los Angeles. Delta Connection pulled out of the run, leaving only United Express to ply the route - just once daily.
Route cuts are not all that uncommon in the late winter and early spring. They're some of the slowest travel periods of the year. Adding impetus to the cuts is, of course, high fuel prices.
