Spirit increases charges for checked luggage
Spirit Airlines has announced a new luggage policy as an alternative to rising flight costs to tackle the increased price of fuel.
From February 20, luggage fees for checked items will increase from $5 to $10 if reserved online. Requests made at the airport to check luggage will rise from $10 to $20 per item of baggage.
Barry Biffle, Senior Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer at Spirit, explained: "Instead of raising every fare across our entire network in response to ever increasing fuel prices, we are proud to introduce our new luggage policy, which gives our passengers the opportunity to control their cost of travel by packing lighter.
However, he reminded passengers: "If you must check luggage, it is 50 percent less when purchased in advance at www.spiritair.com."
All Spirit passengers will still be allowed one piece of carry-on luggage free of charge.
