Self-service check-in at Shanghai Airport

Passengers traveling between China and the U.S. will soon be able to take advantage of self-service check-in kiosks at Shanghai Pudong Airport.

The newly opened Terminal 2 building, used by international passengers, has been fitted with 80 IBM Common Use Self-Service (CUSS) booths.

Developed by the International Air Transport Association, the CUSS standard ensures that self-service machines offer an easy check-in experience for passengers.

Northwest Airlines will be the first carrier to offer self-service tickets at the airport, with several other carriers expected to follow suit over the next few months.

Lin Jian Hai, Shanghai Airport Chief Engineering Architect, commented: "Shanghai Pudong airport believes that it is very important to embrace new technology in providing our passengers with improved customer service.

"We have observed the approach to kiosks taken by leading airports and decided it was now time for us to embrace this technology for better client services."

Several Star Alliance airlines moved into the new terminal when it opened last month, including Air Canada and United Airlines.
