American Airlines

AA to discontinue Oakland flights

American Airlines is to discontinue services to Oakland International Airport in San Francisco's Bay Area.

The carrier will stop flying to and from Oakland on September 3 as a result of increased oil prices.

Marilyn Sandifur, Spokeswoman for the Port of Oakland explained that as American carries just 1.5 percent of all the airport's passengers the changes may not impact on too many travelers.

Continental and Southwest are expected to step in to help passengers travel from Oakland to Texas after American's three daily flights to Dallas/Fort Worth are cancelled.

Sandifur told The Mercury News: "We've got four months to prepare for this change. We would have some expectations of other airlines coming in to meet this demand."

Southwest Airlines launched a new service from the airport to Austin last weekend.
