New nonstops: Motown to Mexico, Montego Bay

Lake Erie is interesting, but for those in search of sun and surf it can't compare with Cozumel (CZM), or measure up to Montego Bay (MBJ). That's the premise behind discount airline USA3000's new nonstop service from Detroit Metro Airport (DTW).

Weekly service is set to get off the ground the week of December 20 from Detroit to both Cozumel and Montego Bay. Cozumel flights will depart from DTW's new North Terminal, which is slated to open in September. Cozumel sojourns will depart on Saturdays during the winter season, and Montego Bay flights will operate on Mondays.

What's important about these new flights is not just that they're taking place, but that USA3000 plans to launch them in the face of dramatic capacity cutbacks across the airline industry. “That Detroit Metro Airport continues to gain new air service amid the ominous news of record fuel costs and airline capacity cuts is a testament to the strength of the Detroit market, and the low-cost structure of our airport,” contends Lester Robinson, CEO of Wayne County Airport Authority.
