El Al Airlines raises fuel surcharges

El Al Airlines has announced that it will raise its fuel surcharges from July 14 by as much as $50 due to continued sharp increases in the price of jet fuel.

Israel's flag carrier said it will raise surcharges by an average of 5 percent, or $20 for short-haul flights, $30 for medium-haul and $50 for long distances.

Rami Levy, El Al's Vice President for Commercial and Aviation ties, told Haaretz: "The increase is minimal, and has become necessary with the rising price of fuel."

He added that the airline's price adjustment is considerably less than the rate of increase in the price of oil.

El Al has raised fares and fuel surcharges several times this year.

In May, fares rose by an average of 6.5 percent while fuel surcharges were boosted by as much as $40 per flight segment.

Similar moves were taken in January, February and March.
