Mayor vetoes slot machines at Sky Harbor

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon has decided against putting slot machines at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Scott Phelps, a spokesman for the mayor, told the Phoenix Business Journal that the decision not to put in the machines was due to the fact that Native American communities in Phoenix were not interested in them.

He added that Gordon is sending a letter to Native American tribal chiefs to explore other investment and revenue partnerships.

Earlier this month, the mayor said the city should look at partnering with tribes to operate slot machines at the airport to help boost revenues, but the idea faced a host of legal barriers and potential political opposition.
