United's Chicago cuts - how to cope
Chicago O'Hare (ORD) is the prime hub for the second-largest carrier in the land - United Airlines. For there, United and its regional partner United Express connect a continent to much of the rest of the world. Soon, fuel prices will shrink that hub, but not significantly.
Here are the cuts that are coming - with advice on how you can cope. The service reductions, of course, are the result of fuel prices.
On September 2, United, Ted, or United Express will end nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale (FLL), West Palm Beach (PBI), and Mexico City (MEX). On November 2 look for United Express to eliminate nonstop service to Kalamazoo, Michigan (AZO) and Bloomington, IL (BMI).
How to cope: You've got options. Discount airline Southwest offers nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale from Chicago Midway, as does discount airline Spirit from O'Hare. American Airlines also plies the ORD-FLL run on a nonstop basis.
Discount airline Southwest offers a number of one-stop, no-change-of-plane flights from Midway to West Palm.
Chicago-Mexico City won't be bereft of players. American Airlines, Aeromexico, and Mexicana all offer nonstops on the route from O'Hare.
OAG says American Eagle flies nonstop from O'Hare to Kalamazoo; and to Bloomington, IL too.
