JetBlue to End Nonstop Flights from Boston to San Francisco, San Jose
What once was a twice daily route across the country will soon be no more. Low-cost airline JetBlue announced the end of its nonstop service between Boston and San Francisco and San Jose due to rising fuel costs.
JetBlue Airways says the nonstop Boston to San Francisco route will end on Sept. 3, and the Boston to San Jose trips will end Sept. 16.
JetBlue currently runs three nonstop flights from its hub in Boston to San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland, Calif. However, the rising cost of fuel has made it difficult for JetBlue to keep this twice daily route intact, leaving fliers to legacy carriers like United and US Airways (both airlines currently offer nonstop flights from Boston to San Francisco and San Jose).
According to an interview in The Boston Globe, fuel for a flight between Boston and San Francisco costs JetBlue $20,000 – approximately $276 per passenger. However, the rising cost of fuel makes it hard for the low-cost carrier to offer passengers discount airline tickets and still make a profit.
