JetBlue's new terminal a tribute to modern aviation
JetBlue Airways Corp. is close to finishing the four-year, $743 million project to build a new home in New York. The terminal pays tribute to 20th century aviation at Kennedy International Airport in New York.
The new terminal features a 20-lane security checkpoint, the largest such screening area in North America, said Tom Kennedy, project director, in an interview with the Associated Press. The security checkpoint also features a fully-automated bag screening and wider spaces to help passengers access luggage and get through security easier and faster.
In addition to the new security area, rubber floors have been put down throughout the security space – JetBlue officials say it’s more comfortable for shoeless feet than the previously installed carpeting. Instead of fumbling around to put your shoes back on, JetBlue has built a sitting bench alongside a blue wall where travelers can sit and readjust luggage, shoes and more.
If you're a JetBlue frequent flier, you might be one of the chosen few to participate in a "dress rehearsal" with the airline that will identify any kinks in new terminal, including security issues, gate checks and more.
The new terminal is expected to be open Oct. 1.
