Travel costs rise - but less than you think says Travelocity
The price of jet fuel is higher, and so are airline fares, but a Cheapflights analysis (pdf format) earlier this summer shows things aren't as bad as some would believe. Now come some data from Travelocity that analyzes the cost of airfare and hotel together. The gist: the sky is not falling.
“There's no arguing that the cost of air travel is up,” says Amy Ziff, Travelocity's Editor-at-Large. “But the mistake many travelers make is ending their vacation search based on that alone. Hotel pricing in many cities has stayed relatively flat compared to 2007.” And hotels, typically, are the priciest part of any vacation.
Travelocity lists 14 areas in this country where travel costs are within $50 this summer of where they were this time last year. The line-up includes the most sought-after vacation destinations in the land:
- Atlanta (ATL) $13.16 more
- Austin (AUS) $14.32 more
- Boston (BOS) $26.28 more
- Charleston, SC (CHS) $43.39 more
- Chicago (ORD & MDW) $39.08 less
- Denver (DEN) $30.16 more
- Las Vegas (LAS) $3.68 more
- Los Angeles (LAX, LGB, SNA, BUR, ONT) $34.53 more
- Orlando (MCO, SFB) $20.81 more
- San Diego (SAN) $0.88 more
- San Francisco (SFO) $43.05 more
- Seattle/Tacoma (SEA) $6.55 more
- South Florida (MIA, FLL, PBI) $8.92 less
- Washington, DC (DCA, IAD, BWI) $33.57 more
