Airlines Ramp up Post-Gustav Service to Gulf Cities
Now that Gustav is getting winded, rendering it a mere overland tropical storm, airlines are gearing up to restore service to cities affected by the storm when it was classed a hurricane.
All the while, carriers are monitoring closely the gestation of Hurricane Hanna, which seems headed for the East Coast of the United States, specifically the Georgia/Florida border. Back to the retreating Gustav. Here’s a sampling of the flight restoration a couple of carriers have planned for the rest of the week:
- On Tuesday, Continental Airlines intends to resume flights into Fort Walton Beach, FL (VPS); Jackson (JAN); Monroe, LA (MLU); and Pensacola (PNS). There is no word yet on Continental’s New Orleans plans. The city appears far, far less affected by the storm than officials had feared over the weekend.
- Discount airline AirTran Airways projects resuming New Orleans flights on Wednesday, September 3, but those plans are predicated on the availability of Transportation Security Administration (Web site: www.tsa.gov) officers, and airport employees. AirTran says it will be back in business at Gulfport/Biloxi (GPT) today (Tuesday, September 2). Pensacola service was set to begin again by the time you read this.
